Competitor price monitoring · Ecommerce buying guide

Choose a price tracker by the pages it can actually check.

“Competitor price tracker” can mean very different tools: marketplace-specific scrapers, selectors for dynamic stores, or repeatable checks of a public page's structured product data. Before paying, verify which one works on your real URLs.

PAL is one option, not a universal retailer scraper. Use the checklist below to decide whether it fits your data.

First decide which kind of tracker you need

Your taskWhat to look forDoes PAL fit?
Compare your price with a public competitor listingOne readable current offer, same currency, a reference priceYes, where static Product JSON-LD or product-typed Open Graph pricing exists
Monitor recurring price changesPersistent baseline, same monitoring ID, repeated scheduled checksYes, for the same supported public product metadata
Extract arbitrary Amazon or Walmart pagesMarketplace-specific selectors, rate-limit management and supportNo promise. PAL does not claim generic marketplace extraction
Monitor a JavaScript-rendered price labelBrowser rendering or a supported custom selectorNot supported by this PAL Actor
Receive automatic emails or repricing recommendationsDelivery integrations and commerce-specific business logicNot built in; PAL exports signals for external integrations
Verify live checkout stock or shipping-inclusive totalsCheckout validation and real-world inventory integrationNot supported

How the PAL price-monitoring workflow works

1. Test page compatibility without paying

Copy relevant static Product JSON-LD or product-type Open Graph tags. Use our free in-browser format checker. This does not fetch the target website or spend Apify credits.

2. Compare against your own reference price immediately

Prepare up to 50 public HTTPS URLs, set monitorId, and optionally pass referencePrices for same-currency comparison on the first run. Build a sample input locally.

3. Re-run the same monitor to see changes

Keep your monitorId consistent. Later runs can report published price deltas, availability-label differences, and flags in CSV/JSON. Check the output before making pricing decisions.

4. Review costs and exceptions before scaling

Billing is per priced product event plus a run-start event. A page can contain several offers. Read the current price-event breakdown and inspect the live Apify Pricing tab before executing.

The manual-work problem you can quantify

A pricing analyst who opens 20 competitor pages four times per week makes 80 page checks per week. At an illustrative two minutes of manual work per page, that is 160 minutes a week before reviewing exceptions. Your own workload may be different, and a monitoring workflow still requires setup and human validation.

Rather than claiming an unverified saving, use the editable time-savings calculator to set your URL count, checking frequency, manual minutes, setup time and human review overhead. Compare hypothetical labor time with modeled event fees. These are calculations, not proven customer outcomes.

Why a cheap Actor can still be the wrong purchase

Lower pricing only helps if the target page exposes data the Actor understands. A successful charged check may produce “unchanged” when no change occurred; paying for the same product again is expected for ongoing observation. Unsupported pages may not provide a usable price. The Actor does not automatically email alerts, verify checkout prices, or tell you how to reprice profitably.

For a first test, open the public synthetic example task before choosing to run it. The example describes test product metadata and is not a real competitor's pricing history.

Frequently asked buying questions

Can I track any ecommerce site?

No. PAL needs public static Product JSON-LD offers or explicit product-type Open Graph pricing. Many Shopify and other ecommerce sites expose this, but not all pages do. Verify one target page first.

Is PAL a Shopify or Amazon API integration?

No. The Actor reads public webpage metadata, not authenticated commerce APIs. It is not marketed as a universal Amazon or Shopify scraper.

Can it compare against my own price on the first run?

Yes, for one eligible offer with a matching currency, by setting an optional exact-URL referencePrices entry.

Will it notify me automatically when a price moves?

No. It outputs structured change signals. Configure an external webhook or another workflow to deliver notifications.

What does it cost with a subscription discount?

Apify may offer plan-dependent discounted rates. See the live-synced PAL rate table and authoritative Actor Pricing tab. We do not promise that plan discounts apply to every account.
